We’re back with our eighth instalment of Bartender’s Favourite and just in time for Halloween! This classic Tiki was first created sometime in the 1930s at the original Tiki cocktail bar Don the Beachcomber in Hollywood, by the founder, Donn Beach. He had originally made the drink for one of his customers who was complaining of a bad hangover. The customer had an important business meeting to attend and needed a drink that would help to hide the effects of overindulgence. Beach went with the hair-of-the-dog solution by combining rum with fruit juices and syrup. The costumer enjoyed this tasty concoction very much and did indeed feel better. However, the business meeting was a bust as he showed up drunk! He confessed to Beach that he felt like he was in a zombie-like state — hence the name the ‘Zombie Cocktail’ was born!

So here’s how to make this spooktacular Tiki cocktail!

Ingredients:

25ml J Wray Gold Rum

25ml J Wray Silver Rum

50ml Mixer Pure Lime Juice

150ml pineapple juice

1 tsp Monin Grenadine

1 tsp Monin passion fruit syrup

Ice

Method:

Step 1

Add the rum, fruit juices, bitters and passion fruit syrup to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake the outside of the shaker feels cold then strain the mixture into a hurricane glass filled with ice.

Step 2

Slowly pour in the grenadine to colour the drink. Garnish the drink with an orange or pineapple wedge.
